A few good eggs

If you think about eggs for a while, you have to admit: Eggs are creepy. Or at least eating them is creepy. Basically, you’re eating what would have turned into a cute, fluffy little chick. And then I feel guilty because some poor hen has spent a considerable amount of time and energy creating a pile of eggs, and just as she’s about to settle in with them, someone swoops in to snatch her clutch. A broad eats abroad

Food in Italy can be divided into two categories: gelato and everything else. The city is a sweet-fiend’s dream, supported by ice cream shops on seemingly every other corner. Gelateria is Italian for “magical land of smooth ice cream that somehow tastes better than anything back home,” and I considered it my duty to visit as many as possible. Gelato for breakfast? Si. A pre-lunch treat? Of course. My record was four cones in one day, which sounds piggish until you realize that I always order the smallest size. That’s reasonable. The best gelato was at Grom in Florence. I imagined it was made by young surfer boys. (more…)

The emperor of ice cream

At the nursing home, the aides would bring my father a tray with assorted soft foods — usually some sort of vegetable, chicken, dessert — and we would feed him as much as he would allow. Because he was stubborn, he’d occasionally refuse to eat more than a few spoonfuls of food, leaving me to wheedle him into having dinner. “Just one bite,” I’d say. “Then I won’t bother you about it anymore.” I got away with this because I am the baby of the family, and because I also acknowledged his weariness of the food. Though it was surprisingly pretty good, this was a man who loved chocolate malts and chicken strips and Mexican food. They don’t serve those foods in nursing homes. (more…)
